because it achieves the level of fame re-
tardance required for aircraft interiors, yet
does so without sacrifcing ease of pro-
cessing and high mechanical properties.
Magnolia also reported that it has
been selected by Bombardier (Montréal,
Québec, Canada) to supply high-perfor-
mance epoxy adhesive for thick bond-
lines (.040 inch to .080 inch/1 mm to 2
mm) in Learjet 85 bonded structures. Its
selection was based on superior perfor-
mance vs. a variety of different adhesives
that were tested by the National Insti-
tute of Aviation Research (NIAR, Wich-
ita, Kan.) in a thick bondline study that
tracked lap shear properties under tem-
perature cycling, hot/wet conditions and
cold temperatures.
Composite Fabrics of America (CFA,
Taylorsville, N.C.) displayed a carbon
fber composite propeller blade from
Sensenich (Plant City, Fla.) featuring a
CFA-made Textral custom patterned fab-
ric. CFA worked with the propeller maker
to replace a 2x2 twill that was bunching
in the mold. The new fabric enabled not
only an excellent surface fnish, due to
enhanced handling characteristics, but a
unique visual appearance that differenti-
ates this product in the market.
CPI Binani (Winona, Minn.) displayed a
hull from the Bombardier Recreational
Products (BRP, Valcourt, Quebec, Cana-
da) Sea-Doo Spark, an entry-level water-
craft that is new for 2014. Heralded as af-
fordably priced ($4,999) and lightweight,
it reportedly weighs half of other personal
watercraft, at 405 lb/185 kg. CPI Binani
worked with BRP to replace glass fber re-
inforced thermoset resins in the hull with

Suspension system lightweighting
Developed for Daimler AG's (Stuttgart, Germany) Mercedes-Benz Sprinter cargo van, this
carbon fiber composite front transverse leaf spring was on display at the Henkel Corp.
(Madison Hts., Mich.) booth. Henkel's LOCTITE MAX2 polyurethane resin reportedly helped
reduce the spring's weight by 63 percent vs. its steel predecessor while its low viscosity
shortened mold cycle time and improved wetout of the thick preform.
direct long fber thermoplastic (D-LFT)
molded polypropylene. The glass rein-
forcement was 0.5-inch long fber at a 30
percent fber content by weight. The new
material helped BRP meet price and pro-
duction volume goals and also improved
the SparkÕs fuel effciency, cutting fuel
burn from 5 gal/hr to 1.9 gal/hr. CPI Bi-
nani also exhibited parts for the auto in-
dustry, including an underbody shield for
Cadillac and a door surround for Jeep
Wranglers. Seed tank lids and inner roof
panels for the agricultural industrial were
also featured.
